Fun and Exciting Upcoming Semester for Food is Elementary

For the past 14 weeks, Food is Elementary has been working within a number of classrooms to help children gain a better understanding of health and nutrition. Throughout this first semester children learned the definition of a "whole food," and discovered all of the healthy food choices from the grains, vegetables, fruits, and legumes groups within the food pyramid. Students had the opportunity to try new foods and create many healthy recipes.
Now within Semester 2, children will be able to take the foundation of healthy living they built in Semester 1 and apply that knowledge of healthy foods to how recipes are made in various areas around the world. Within this next Semester, each week Food Educators will take the students on a trip to a new country or continent throughout the world. During the lesson children will learn about the geographical location of this country or continent, they will learn about the climate in this area of the world, discuss the people and their culture, and learn a great deal about the foods that are eaten in this part of the world. Students will then get to create a delicious and nutritious recipe highlighting ingredients from this new and exciting place. Each lesson will also end with traditional music and dancing from this area of the world. Some of the places we will study are: Africa, South America, Middle East, and Europe. Stay tuned for more information about each individual lesson and wonderful recipes created from many wonderful places around the world!
