My First Veggie Van Stop
I went to my first Veggie Van stop this week at the CDC Head Start location and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The moment you set foot near the Veggie Van you can feel the positive energy radiating from everyone around. The staff is extremely nice and very knowledgeable and the community members are exceptionally friendly and welcoming.
I had the opportunity to observe how excited people were to purchase the fresh produce and how much they enjoyed learning more about the foods that were offered. Two different food samples were offered today. The first was farro pesto salad with tomato and the cooking demonstration was for a summer squash soup. Both dishes were wonderful and everyone had fun trying them. I truly enjoyed visiting the Veggie Van and seeing first-hand how Local Matters is impacting the community.
The Veggie Van aims to provide fresh, local, and healthy fruits and vegetables straight from the farm to areas of the community that do not have access to these foods. Several organizations around the country are trying to increase the access of healthful foods to these areas. Let’s Move, a project started by Michelle Obama, has a lot of information about creating healthier communities and information on how the government and other organizations are working to improve the food system.
