Getting Started: An Intro to Local Food

If you're new to the idea of eating local foods, welcome! The table is big enough for all, no matter where you are on your journey of exploring the bounty of local, Ohio foods.

Getting involved in the local food movement doesn't mean you can't shop at your favorite grocery store or that you have to change your diet. It's as simple as making small choices that say:

  • Yes! I want everyone in my community to have equal access to healthy, local food.
  • Yes! I believe food education for our children is important.
  • Yes! I support local farmers and local businesses who want to provide the best foods to our community.

Our choices about local food affects some of the most significant issues in our time - obesity, diabetes, climate change and economic opportunity. So how can you get involved?

The simplest way: vote with your fork!

  1. View Fresh Connect and frequent restaurants and businesses that have committed to providing local foods on their menus and in their stores.
  2. Next time you visit your local grocery store, ask what items came from Ohio farmers.
  3. Visit a farmers' market in your area. (A list of area farmers' markets can be found in the Fresh Connect directories.)
  4. Ask your local library about the latest books available on the foods we eat.
  5. Take a moment and learn more about Local Matters, our role in the community  and when you're ready, how you can get more involved.

We're excited to have you at our table!
