Healthful Food Access

Our Healthful Food Access program collaborates with neighborhood partners to organize, plan and grow local food closer to where our neighbors live. We also connect neighborhoods interested in starting a community garden to our community partners who can assist in this process. Finally, we also work with our neighbors to create access opportunities to locally grown food in the community through projects like our Veggie Van and teach them how to prepare simple, low-cost meals from this harvest.

Gardeners at Weinland Park Community Garden

Food Educator Rachael Smith was one of 20 volunteers at Earth Day 2009 led by Program Manger Trish Dehnbostel. Volunteers met at ECLC to service the edible gardens and create edible planters for the children to enjoy during play.

Urban Agriculture in Action

In the fall of 2008, Brookside Elementary Principal Fritz Monroe noticed the school’s special needs students were very engaged when working in the school’s flowerbeds. He contacted Local Matters and together, the school, Local Matters and their partner, Urban Wild, developed The Three Sisters-Settlers Garden. Shortly after its inception, Principal Monroe extended work in the garden to all of his students and they created a sustainable way to provide fresh produce to the community.
