The Board of Directors of Local Matters is pleased to announce the appointment of Yolanda Owens as the organization’s new Executive Director, following a nationwide search conducted by Benefactor Group. In a field of exemplary candidates, Yolanda stood out for the depth of her experience in nonprofits and her understanding of food security, systems, and what it takes to achieve food sovereignty. Yolanda’s interest in the position and in Local Matters stems from her desire to lead a nonprofit organization that focuses on working with community members to create equitable access to a sustainable food system with the goal of a world free of food-related chronic disease.

“We are thrilled to welcome Yolanda Owens as the next Executive Director of Local Matters,” said Luka Papalko, Local Matters’ Board Chair. “Yolanda is a dynamic, collaborative leader with extensive nonprofit experience, deep community connections, and an unwavering commitment to Local Matters’ mission, vision, and values. Her leadership and expertise will be instrumental in advancing our growth and amplifying our impact across Central Ohio and beyond.”

Owens is an accomplished professional and advocate of food initiatives across Central Ohio. Currently serving as a strategist for the Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural, & Environmental Sciences she supports the Associate Dean of Academic Programs by identifying gaps and strategically cultivating alliances with educational institutions. Yolanda has served in roles at PrimaryOne, Mid-Ohio Food Collective, Godman Guild, and early in her career as a food educator and Veggie Van manager at Local Matters. Yolanda holds a bachelor’s in Agricultural Communication & International Economic and Social Development from The Ohio State University, College of Food, Agricultural, & Environmental Sciences, as well as a certificate in U.S. Food Systems in Public Health from Johns Hopkins.

“Food access and health are deeply connected, and Local Matters plays a critical role in ensuring our community has the resources it needs,” Owens said. “As I step into this role, I am committed to leveraging relationships, diversifying funding, and fostering collaboration to strengthen and sustain this work. This is a moment of transformation, and I’m excited to build on Local Matters’ legacy while shaping a future that ensures long-term impact.”

As Executive Director, Owens will oversee Local Matters’ operations and play a critical role in steering its strategic direction. She will be vital to fundraising, financial management, and community partnerships. Under Owens’ guidance, Local Matters will maintain and expand its impact, reaching thousands of children and families with comprehensive food education, access, advocacy, and food rescue programming each year.

“Yolanda’s deep experience in food access, equity, and community development—combined with her proven leadership and strong relationships across Central Ohio’s nonprofit landscape —make her an invaluable asset to Local Matters and the communities we serve. Her commitment to transparency, collaboration, and sustainable impact will be instrumental in guiding Local Matters into its next chapter. We are thrilled to welcome her as our next Executive Director,” said Noreen Warnock, Co-Founder and Interim Director.
